Welcome to 2017! The team at Lyons Road Family Chiro hope 2017 will be your healthiest year yet. As we enter this new year, have you made any New Year’s Resolutions? Have you already broken a few? In writing this blog post, I tried hard to avoid the typical ‘New Year’s Resolution’ type clichés.
Rather, we offer you a different approach to take into 2017: that of ‘healthy-ish’. I’ll explain what I mean by ‘healthy-ish’ in a moment.
The problem with New Year’s Resolutions
According to a Statisticbrain New Year’s Resolution survey, only 9% of those surveyed felt they were successful in meeting their resolution, with 48% having infrequent success and 42% failing on their resolution.
Why do you think many New Year’s Resolutions are doomed to failure?
Perhaps it comes down to your goals: have they been set too high, are they too vague, or simply unachievable? How much influence does lack of personal control, excessive stress, and negative emotions contribute to resolutions slipping? There really isn’t one sweet answer to solve your health challenges.
Diet and weight management
I’ll use diet and weight management to illustrate my point. Despite a seemingly endless variety of approaches, there doesn’t seem to be a ‘one size fits all’ solutions to weight management, pardon the pun. From the sugar-quitting advocates to the passionate paleos, the gluten-free gurus to the vege-juice veterans, what approach is right for you?
Thankfully, there is no one way to good health and people are starting to come around to this. Rather than investing your hopes and dreams into one single ‘magic bullet’, perhaps try a simpler approach.
Try a ‘healthy-ish’ approach to diet and health
We can still enjoy eating the things we like, however armed with moderation and a general guiding principle of: is this healthy and will this help me?
The World Health Organisation define health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being”: a balancing act in which all aspects of your life need to be taken into account and thought about.
Behavioural scientists at the CSIRO believe the secret to successful weight loss (you can apply this to other areas though) is determining your diet type (it’s a free quiz, and we are also not endorsing any particular diet type).
They have pulled together these five diet types, based on personality and diet type: take the quiz here to see what it reveals in your case.
- The Thinker: over thinking leads to stress and mood swings which can upset your eating habits.
- The Craver: A tendency to experience food cravings can lead to overeating in certain situations.
- The Foodie: you are passionate about food. Food is always on your mind, whether it’s making, eating or experiencing it.
- The Socialiser: You are flexible with what you eat, how much you eat and when you eat. Your eating is in part defined by your social activities.
- The Freewheeler: You are spontaneous and tend to live in the here-and-now.
Chiropractic and You
We have your back in 2017 and beyond. Regardless of how you approach your diet, having a holistic and integrated outlook toward your health and well being seems to be a good approach. Thinking about the following areas seems to work: diet, exercise, adequate rest, good posture and a healthy spine and nervous system.
As your chiropractor, I know only too well the problems that arise when your spine and nervous system are injured. Pain and discomfort, headaches, irritability and reduced performance levels are all common issues addressed by chiropractic.
Regular chiropractic adjustments work to keep you in optimal health, out of pain and performing at your best.
Chiropractors are the spinal health professionals, and use a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment.
